OCTWL2014 & Zarf
Zarf is one of the best Scrabble apps available. Here’s how to make it even better:
- Download the app, then go to Settings – >Word Lists – >Download New Word List… (at the top),
- Type this in the URL field: “http://oldtownscrabble.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/OWL2014-187632.txt” (be careful to type it in correctly, Zarf may ask you to identify the language, if that happens, select “English,” check to make sure that the new list appears in the “Active Word Lists” list),
- Hit the settings “back button” in the upper left corner, take a look at the “Baseline Word List” and set it to TWL06 (or whatever the OCTWL2 list is called, if this list isn’t available, then go back to Word Lists – >Download New Word List, and load the list from this URL: “http://oldtownscrabble.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/OWL2-178691.txt,” then go back to the “Baseline Word List” setting and set it),
- Back out of the setting menu (hit the Search button on the bottom left).
Now, you not only have the new OWL2014 on your phone (in your Zarf app), but the app will also highlight new words in green (i.e. words that are in OWL2014, but not in OCTWL2). Here is a post a put up a while back with the counts of new words by length: http://oldtownscrabble.com/13/05/new-word-stats/. To test this out, go to this post, download any of the lists of new words, and search for them in Zarf (e.g. DA, GI, BURK, HECKUVA, SCHLONG, etc.).
Disclaimer: I can’t guarantee the accuracy of the OCTWL20114 list at the above URL. It’s not an official list (I built it myself). With that said, I’ve used it for several months and haven’t found any errors or omissions. Please comment on this post or send me an email or text if you find any errors.
